The state’s annual sales tax-free holiday is set for Friday-Sunday, Aug. 20-22, this year. The holiday is designed to help parents and students lower the costs of preparing for the upcoming school year.

As in previous years, during the tax-free holiday, shoppers will not pay state or local sales tax on items such as clothing and footwear priced under $100. Backpacks, if priced under $100 and used by elementary and secondary students, are also exempt.

In addition to clothing and footwear, Texas families also get a sales tax break on most school supplies priced at less than $100. Furthermore, changes to state law now allow layaway programs to be used on items purchased during the Tax-Free Weekend.

“Tax-Free Weekend is a time for families to save on the school supplies their children need,” State Rep. Yvonne Gonzalez Toureilles said. “I encourage families to take advantage of this opportunity, and I hope all our students have a safe and successful school year.”
