Ernest Gene “Moose” Bowman, 79, of Mathis, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010.

Mr. Bowman was born Jan. 11, 1931, in Macomb, Ill. to Ernest E. and Effie Teel Bowman. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 and spent 20 years in the service, attaining the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, and retiring in 1968. His tours included being stationed at NAS Chase Field and McMurdo base in Antarctica. He also worked for Grelling Oil Company before becoming a partner in a successful oil company of his own, retiring from private business in 1994. He then spent five years with TDCJ at the Garza Unit in Beeville before his final retirement in 1999.He was an accomplished pilot and an avid golfer. He enjoyed gardening and hosting friends with his wife at their lake house on Lake Corpus Christi.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Cordie and Treva; and two brothers, Bert and Duane.

Survivors include his wife, Teena Bowman of Mathis; two sons, Steve Bowman of Beeville and Jackie (Amy Mifflin) Bowman of Austin; two step-daughters, Terry Young of San Saba and Tamra Redmond of Austin; and one granddaughter, Kacey Bowman of Victoria.

Visitation was held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Dobie Funeral Home Chapel with the family present in the evening from 6 to 8 p.m. A military graveside service was conducted Thursday at 10:45 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

In lieu of flowers, blood donations may be made to the Coastal Bend Blood Center in Corpus Christi.
