Goliad JV players win tennis medals

The Goliad Tiger tennis team participated in the Yoakum Invitational Tournament on Feb. 7-8.

In the boys junior varsity division Thursday, Dempsey Duprie finished third in his first tournament. The boys doubles team of freshman Steven Koehne, and junior Zach Helmer won two matches to take the tournament title.

Austen Guerrero and Ryan Walker were defeated in the opening round, but bounced back to defeat a Columbus duo 8-5 in consolation. In JV girls singles, Denise Jones won in the first round but fell in the second round.

On Friday, the Goliad varsity won eight matches. In boys singles, junior Ryder Billo defeated a Columbus player 8-0 in the first round and defeated his next opponent from Columbus 8-0 in the semi-finals.

In the finals, Billo defeated an El Campo player 6-2, 6-0 to win the title for the second straight year.

Sophomore Tanner Troell defeated a Shiner player 8-7 (11-9 tiebreaker) in the opening round, but fell short against the eventual second-place El Campo contestant.

In boys doubles, freshman John Dorsett and sophomore Marcus Gruetzmacher lost in the opening round to an El Campo duo, but bounced back to an 6-0 victory in consolation against a Victoria West team. The team of junior John Von Dohlen and junior Jake Schneider (had similar results, losing in the first round to the eventual finalists from Gonzales. In the consolation round, the Goliad team defeated a Yoakum team 6-1.

In varsity girls singles, junior Briana Naranjo lost 8-5 in the opening round to an opponent from Victoria East, but bounced back with a 6-1 victory in consolation. In girls doubles, the team of juniors Mallory Bruns and Rachel Vaughn beat a Shiner team 8-7 (7-4 tie-breaker). In the second round, they were beaten 8-5 by a Yoakum team. In mixed doubles, the team of junior Anthony Maldonado and senior Shana Elliott lost in the opening round, but bounced back to defeat a Victoria East team 6-1 in the consolation match.
