GOLIAD – Christy Paulsgrove, superintendent of Goliad ISD, said Friday the school district is studying the possibility of allowing teachers to carry concealed handguns on campus.

A handful of school district in Texas, including Ganado and Louise ISDs, are allowing teachers and administrators to arm themselves on campus.

“I went to a conference in Austin and shared the information with the board,” Paulsgrove said. “Information has been printed from the Texas Association of School Boards outlining the steps if we want to do that and I have shared that with the board.

“We haven’t put it on any kind of agenda item to pass, but it is certainly something we have all talked about. I shared it with our steering committee members. I want to get feedback and find out what they think about it. If we ever did it, we’d have a public hearing before we pass it.”

Goliad ISD recently hired a security officer to monitor all campuses.

“He is on campus to kind of build a rapport with the kids,” Paulsgrove said. “We are working toward making him an SRO (school resources officer). If that’s the case, he will be able to carry a gun on campus.

“He’s another set of eyes and can be there to help.”

The Goliad ISD school board met Monday night.
