GOLIAD – The Goliad County Commissioners Court approved Monday an interlocal agreement with the Goliad Independent School District to hire a school resource officer to monitor security at all the GISD campuses.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Ted Long was the only one on the court voting against the agreement. Long said the SRO would technically be an employee of the county, but Goliad ISD Superintendent Christy Paulsgrove stressed that the new position would not cost county taxpayers anything.

Paulsgrove said the school district would reimburse the amount for the salary to the county as part of the agreement.

Before a standing-room-only crowd in the courthouse, Goliad County resident Kenneth Buelter claimed Precinct 2 Commissioner Alfonso Morales should not be allowed to vote on the issue. Buelter said Morales’ employment with GISD constituted a conflict of interest.

Goliad County Attorney Rob Baiamonte said since Morales did not stand to receive any financial gain from the decision, he would not have to recuse himself.
