Billo defends Goliad Winter Invitational title

The Goliad varisity tennis teams won 13 matches at the Goliad Winter Invitational tournament on Friday and Saturday.

In varsity boys singles, Ryder Billo received a bye in the first round and defeated Poteet’s Julian Meyer 8-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Billo defeated Victoria St. Joseph’s Collin Hartman 8-2. In the final, Billo beat St. Joseph’s David Du 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 to win the title for a third straight year.

Tanner Troell also competed in boys singles and won in the first round.

In varsity girls singles, Briana Naranjo won in the quarterfinal and fell to Port Aransas’ Savannah Guillot 8-5 in the semis. In the third-place matchup, Naranjo lost 8-4. Kelsey Kocian was defeated in the first round by George West’s Sarah Whitley 8-4.

In varsity boys doubles, John Dorsett and Marcus Gruetzmacher defeated won 8-3 in the opening round and 8-0 in the quarterfinals before losing 8-5 in the semis. The duo regrouped to win 8-1 in the third-place match.

John Von Dohlen and Jake Schneider picked up an early victory before losing 8-3 in the quarterfinals.

In varsity girls doubles, Hope Willms and Kennedy Drozd defeated won 8-4 in the first round before losing in the quarterfinals. Rachel Vaughn and Mallory Bruns (received a bye the first round, but lost in the quarterfinals 8-3.

In varsity mixed doubles, Shana Elliott and Anthony Maldonado defeated a Poteet team in the quarterfinals 8-3. In the semifinals, the two lost 8-2 to a Refugio team. In the third-place match, the duo rebounded to defeat a refugio team 8-2.

In the junior varsity division, Goliad’s Zach Helmer and Steven Koehne won the boys doubles title. Bryce Bryce Ousley and Katie Zertova finished second in mixed doubles.
