GOLIAD – Ernest Alaniz announced Thursday that he will enter the Goliad County Judge race.

Alaniz said he will file for the March 4 Democratic primary. The election will be Nov. 4, 2014.

Alaniz and his wife, Robin, have resided in Goliad since 2008 after Alaniz retired as a deep water drilling superintendent for BP Chemicals.

Alaniz has been a vocal anti-uranium mining activist in Goliad County and also has expressed concern with the looming effects of the Eagle Ford Shale play in the area.

“The Eagle Ford Shale is a similar issue,” Alaniz told the Advance-Guard. “I see the trauma our neighboring communities are enduring. Goliad is not in the Eagle Ford yet, but it will be. All it will take is an increase in the natural gas price”

Alaniz said he wants to help bring organization and unity to local government.

“I see dedicated people working in different county and city offices trying their best for the good of Goliad County, but there in neither a unified effort nor collaboration between them,” Alaniz said. “We must work for the same goal, which is ensuring Goliad will be a great place to live.

“Sometimes it seems that the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing and we seem to be reacting than acting to anticipate and prepare for the future.”

Alaniz cited the stalemate between the county and Goliad ISD over their interlocal agreement for a school resource officer as an example of local government’s failure to work together.

David Bowman was elected county judge in 2010.
