GOLIAD – The Goliad Tigers saw their window to capture a District 15-2A, Division I playoff berth close more Friday night in a 26-8 loss to the Luling Eagles.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 5-3 on the season and 2-2 in district play while Luling improved to 8-1 and 4-1.

Goliad travels to Marion (6-2, 4-0) tonight with their playoff hopes likely depending on a win over the first-place Bulldogs.

The Tigers started fast as Kersey Jones’ 6-yard touchdown run and Dalton Sturm’s 2-point run put them up 8-0 in the first quarter.

Eagles quarterback Trauden Staton bulled his way in to the end zone from 1 yard out with 1;34 remaining in the first quarter to pull Luling within 8-6. The Tigers held on to the lead as a 2-point attempt by the Eagles failed.

After a scoreless second quarter, Luling’s Kevin Larkin broke loose on a 13-yard touchdown to give the Eagles the lead for good at 12-8 with 2:15 left in the third quarter.

The physical Eagles wore down the Goliad defense in the fourth quarter. Shaft Cubit’s 6-yard touchdown run with 7:48 left in the game widened Luling’s lead to 18-8.

The Eagles put the game away with a 1-yard touchdown by Cubit with 4:15 remaining.
