GOLIAD – Following is a preview of the Class 2A girls 400-meter dash at Friday's and Saturday's UIL State Track and Field Championships at Austin's Mike A. Myers Stadium:

GOLIAD ATHLETE: Kendall Coles

STARTING TIME: 7:45 p.m., Friday

FASTEST QUALIFYING TIME: 57.48 seconds by Dallas Hampton Prep's Diana Granados

STATE RECORD: 52.40 by Carrollton Newman Smith'sCourtney Okolo in 2012

CLASS 2A RECORD: 54.84 by Essie Kelley of Spur in 1974

PREVIEW: Region IV-2A champion Coles enters with the sixth-fastest qualifying time of 59.29 and will run in Lane 6. Granados is making her state meet debut. The other qualifiers in order are Jarrell's Destiny Fairley (57.65), White Oak's Kadriane Sanders (58.47), Farmersville's J'Kaylee Clark (58.79), Tatum's Ro'neshia Simpson (58.87), Stanton's Latriceia Smith (59.35), East Bernard's Megan Lee (59.46) and Ballinger's Holly Huston (59.67). Simpson won the bronze at the state meet last year with a time of 58.04 and Smith was fourth in 58.40. Clark is also a returnee and took eighth in 2013 with a time of 1:02.26.

SYNOPSIS: Coles finds herself in a very fast field and may have to run a sub-58 to medal.
