One man is dead after a dilapidated house in Gregory collapsed and trapped three people Thursday.

Gregory Police Sgt. David Martinez said officers responded to an emergency call at a house within the 600 block of South Gregory at 3:17 p.m. Thursday. He said three men were trapped in the house, which collapsed when the homeowner was attempting to demolish it.

One man was killed, but emergency crews were able to rescue the other two men who were working in the house, Martinez said.

“One of the gentlemen escaped with minor injuries,” Martinez said. “One is in critical condition.”

No people were currently residing in the house, Martinez said.

Several emergency units responded to the call, including the Gregory Police and Public Works Departments, the Portland Fire Department, the Ingleside Fire and Fire Corps Departments, the San Patricio County Sheriff and EMS Departments, the Tri-County EMS Department, the Taft Police Department, and the Guardian EMS Department, said Ingleside Fire Chief R.J. Thomas.
