Staff Sergeant Joe R. Martinez of the 104th Timberwolf Infantry Division was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in connection with military operations in Germany on April 18, 1945.

When his company was pinned down by enemy fire, Sgt. Martinez made his way to an exposed position on the third floor of a building, from which he adjusted mortar fire on the enemy positions. Although his position was detected by the enemy and subjected to a withering barrage, he refused to abandon his post, effectively dislodging the enemy from its positions and inflicting heavy damage.

Under cover of this fire, the company was able to advance and seize the objective with minimal losses. Sgt. Martinez’s actions, above and beyond the call of duty, reflected distinct credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.

Sgt. Martinez entered military service from Cuero and his son, Michael Martinez, is a resident of Goliad.
