Kenedy Leopards Defeat Runge Lady Yellowjackets 12-6

The Kenedy Leopards faced the Runge Lady Yellowjackets on Friday, March 25 in Kenedy. The Leopards got their second district win with a score of 12 to 6. Pitching for the Leopards were Sophomores Becca Brown and Saren Sutton. Sutton relieved Brown in the top of the second inning and earned 4 strikeouts.

The visiting team would strike first, scoring 2 runs in the first inning. The Leopards scored one run in the bottom of the first inning. Brown got on with a walk and then Junior, Megan Villanueva hit a triple to score Brown. Junior, Desiree Guerra also got a hit in the bottom of the first, but the Leopards would leave Villanueva and Guerra on going into the top of the second inning with a score of 2 to 1 in Runge’s favor.

Runge would put up two more runs in the top of the 2nd inning. The Leopards would start the bottom half of the inning drawing two walks by Sophomore Lauren Hernandez and Senior Irma Torres. Back at the top of the line-up, Senior, Jackie Hartsfield, would get on base with a hit. With bases loaded, Villanueva would come up to bat and draw a walk and Hernandez scored a run for the Leopards. Freshman, Teryn Schmidt then hit a stand-up double scoring Torres, Hartsfield, and Villanueva. The Leopards would end the 2nd inning with a lead of 5 to 4.

The Leopards went on to hold the Lady Yellowjackets in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th innings and score one run in the 3rd. The bottom of the 4th inning was another big inning for the Leopards. They put up six more runs. Schmidt would start the inning off with another double. The next two batters, Guerra and Sutton drew walks to load the bases. Hernandez would come up to bat and hit a single, scoring Schmidt, Guerra, and Sutton. Freshman, Laurel Vickery, also draws a walk. At the top of the order, Hartsfield would hit a single to score Vickery. Brown would go on to score the last run of the inning for the Leopards. The Leopards are leading the Lady Yellowjackets 12 to 4 going into the 5th inning.

The Lady Yellowjackets scored one run in the 6th and one run in 7th, but the Leopards held solid with their defense, with a final score of 12 to 6.

The Leopards are now 2-2 in district play and will travel to Woodsboro on Tuesday, March 29 to end the first round of district and start the second round of district on Friday, April 1 against the Falls City Beaverettes in Kenedy. Both games starting at 6 pm.
