In the night cap in Nixon it would be the Kenedy JV Lions versus the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs in a exciting game to say the least. The Lions would be looking to stay undefeated on the year and it looked like the streak was going to end on Thursday night in Nixon. The Lions moved the ball between the 20’s but would have trouble getting into the end zone on a number of drives. The Lions would strike first as Dominic Cruz would connect with Marcos Dehoyos on a 5yd pass. Jeremy Rodriguez would run the 2pt conversion in to make it 8-0 Lions. The Lions would score again in the second quarter as Cruz would hit Dehoyos again this time for 40 yards. 2pt conversion would be no good to leave it at 14-0. With 48 seconds left in the half the Mustangs would break free for a 44 yd run and add the 2pt conversion to cut the lead to 6. At the half the Lions would lead 14-8. In the third quarter the Mustangs would show their passing game off as they would connect on a 46 yard pass. The 2pt would be stopped and the score tied at 14. The Lions would answer later in the third as Cedric Mejia would race down the middle of the field on a 85 yard sprint to make it 20-14 as the 2pt conversion would be stopped. Mejia would recover the kickoff after the touchdown but nothing would come of this turnover as the Lions would give it back on down at the 20. The Mustangs would take the lead with a 16 yard run and 2pt conversion with 8:44 in the 4th quarter. The Lions would take the next possession and march down the field until the big play connection of Cruz to Dehoyos would strike again as they connected on a 43 yd pass to put the Lions at the Mustangs 5 yard line. After a couple of negative plays the Lions would find the end zone on 4th down and goal from the 16 yard line as Cruz connected with Tristin Villarreal for the go ahead score. The 2pt conversion was no good leaving the Lions in front 26-22 with 2:45 on the clock. The Mustangs would try to regain the lead but the Lions defense would deny the long pass attempt with time running out to hold onto the victory and move to 8-0 on the year.
