“We are inexperienced this year as a team so we make mistakes, but with every game we learn and get better,” Senior Brady Braun said. “Our defense is improving and something that the team takes pride in.”
Nixon-Smiley won the annual Karnes City Athletic Booster Club Tournament held Thursday through Saturday. La Vernia placed 2nd after losing to Nixon 37-32, and Stockdale came in 3rd after defeating Taft 46-28. Eight teams participated.
Saturday, Dec. 3
Dominating over the Kendy Lions, the Badgers won with a 59-27 point game. Junior Philip Vaughan was high point with 15, along with Braun scoring 13, and Freshman Dylan Wright chipping in 7. The Badgers took control every quarter and defensively held the Lions, which led the Badgers to gain the fourth-place title in the round robin, two-pool tournament sponsored by the Karnes City Athletic Boosters.
Friday, Dec. 2
In double-overtime the Badgers defeated Sinton. Braun led the team with a total of 24 points, followed by Juniors Devontrey Forth scoring 18, and K.D. Glenn with 17. The Badgers gained the victory leaving the score at 89-86.
Thursday, Dec. 1
The boys got off to a slow start on Thursday, falling to Nixon and Taft, placing them last in their pool of four teams.
In the Nixon game that night, the Badgers lost 69-42. Braun was the only Badger to get into double digits with 11 points.
The Badgers opened the tournament Thursday afternoon against Taft, who edged them out 55-58. Braun led all scorers with 27 points, followed by Forth with 11.
The All-Tournament team included Nixon-Smiley’s Jamie Moreno, who was MVP, and Seth Barrow and Robert Mejia; La Vernia’s Kenny Moehrig and Bryan Escamila. Sef Ramirez of Sinton; Stockdale ‘s Trevor Baumann and Caleb Sanchez; Skidmore’s Eric Schmaker; amd Taft’s Lawrence Saldivar.
The JV Badger Basketball team participated in a tournament in Goliad this past weekend, taking first place.
