Badgers fall to Poth in district opener

The Badger Basketball team faced Poth as the district opener on Dec. 20 and were defeated 53- 40. Junior Forward Devontrey Forth led the Badgers with 13 points, followed by Senior Center Brady Braun and Junior Guard Philip Vaughan both totaling 9 points apiece.

As the new year began, the Badgers were 11-11 overall and 0-1 in district. They continued district last night against George West and travel, along with the girls’ teams, to Natalia this Friday. The varsity boys’ game follows the Lady Badgers, with start time approximately 8 p.m.

In non-district action Dec. 30, despite a slow start in the first quarter, the Badgers outscored Industrial and won 44-34.

The Badgers were held to only 3 in the first quarter, compared with the Cobras’ 12, but then got their momentum in the second quarter. Forth led all scorers with 16.

The Badgers participated in a pair of tournaments as the holidays hit.

They placed 2nd in the Goliad Tournament Dec. 15-17.

“We played hard through the whole tournament,” Junior Philip Vaughn said. “We never gave up, people stepped up, and we played as a team.”

The Badgers defeated Mathis 49-33, Yorktown 56-44, Kenedy 61-33, but were defeated in the championship game by Marion 57-34. They also defeated Goliad 50-47 in the tournament opener with Senior Kevon Shelton knocking down the game winning 3-point basket, and defeated Edna 59-31.

Then, on Dec. 27-28, the varsity boys struggled in the La Vernia Tournament. Nixon-Smiley defeated them 50-45, despite 15 points from Braun and 13 from Junior Point-guard K.D. Glenn. They also fell to Somerset 61-43 with Glenn being the only Badger in double-digits at 12. La Vernia beat the Badgers in an early game on Dec. 28, 32-21. They finally faced Schulenberg and lost 45-27.
