February 23rd, 24th, and 25th was the annual Booster Club Baseball Tournament at Red Holshak Field. On Thursday the Kenedy Lions got started as they played Three Rivers in the opening game. The Lions would win this game 17-1 in five innings with freshmen Dominic Cruz picking up the win. The second game of the day had the Goliad Tigers and the Woodsboro Eagles squaring off. An accident at Hwy 72 and 181 knocked the power out and the game couldn’t be completed on Friday so the Lions would advance to the Championship and the Tigers would play for third place.

First game was between Runge and Nixon in which Runge would come from behind to win 9-8 with Darren Torres picking up the win. In game two Nixon and Skidmore would play to a 10-10 tie after 7 innings and Skidmore would pick up the win with the tie breaker of 5 more runners to third to Nixon’s 3 runners to third. In the last game of the day Runge and Skidmore finish off the day with Skidmore winning 15-6 and Sonny Hernandez picking up the win. Skidmore would end up in the championship and Runge in the third place game. Nixon would play Woodsboro for the consolation final.

Saturday’s first game would be Three Rivers and the Kenedy JV. Three Rivers would out last the JV Lions 18-11 as Chris Moya would pick up the win. In the consolation final Woodsboro would out slug Nixon 10 hits to 3 and earn the consolation championship with a 16-7 victory. The third place game would be between Goliad and Runge. Tyler Flores would pick up his second victory of the tournament as the Tigers ran away with the game 19-2 in five innings. In the championship game the Lions and Bobcats would square off and Isaac Cruz would throw a 1 hit shutout in a 10-0 victory in five innings. The Lions would score in the second inning as RayJ Garza would walk, followed by a single by Eddie Villarreal, a walk by Kris Bryan, and then a walk by Dominic Cruz to bring in Garza. In the third inning Jordan Valdez would cross the plate running for Isaac Cruz as Garza would hit a deep fly to left in which Valdez tagged up and the error on the throw would allow Valdez to score. The Lions would blow it open in the bottom of the fifth as Dominic Cruz, Isaac Cruz, JD De Los Santos, Garza, Villarreal, Bryan, Aaron Castillo, Zepeda would all score in the inning with Tristan Mejia drawing a bases loaded walk to end the game.

All tournament team consisted of Hagen Johnston from Three Rivers, Raul Tovar from Nixon, JT Blaschke from Woodsboro, Jeric Esparza from Runge, Colby Schrade from Goliad, Dalton Sturm from Goliad, Tyler Flores from Goliad, Jeremy Byrd from Skidmore, Sonny Hernandez from Skidmore, Dominic Cruz from Kenedy, Rolie Zepeda from Kenedy, JD De Los Santos from Kenedy, and the MVP was Isaac Cruz who pitched a 1 hitter in the championship and went 5 for 6 with 4 runs scored and 4 rbi’s, 2 stolen bases and a walk. Thanks to all the booster club members and parents who helped make the tournament another success.
