Don’t Take Your Rig to Town
(Sung to the tune of Johnny Cash’s “Don’t take your guns to town”
By Michaela Ryan
Young driver name of Gus
Bored to tears on the job
Of following country roads
He was filled with restlessness
He’d never been to Kenedy
He hosed down his rig and Shined the chrome
And he wiped mud from his boots
But then boss man yelled as he drove away
Don’t take that rig to town, Son,
Don’t take that rig to town
He grinned and waved the boss man bye
I’m Gus and I drive the best
I can turn as sharp and back as straight
As good men can
And I wouldn’t speed without a cause
Or run nobody down
But the gauger yelled as he drove away
Don’t take that rig to town, Son,
Don’t take that rig to town
Well, he passed the city limit sign
And turned on streets so fine
And he drove and just enjoyed himself
And even passed a red stop sign
A siren came from out nowhere then
He slowed to stop his rig
And he heard again the gauger’s cry
Don’t take that rig to town, Son,
Don’t take that rig to town
He knew cops were after him
So grabbed his CDL
Kenedy’s finest knew what he’d done
So down the window came
The cop said, “Where’s your CDL?”
This here is Main Street, Son
Then he remembered the gauger’s yell
Don’t take that rig to town, Son,
Don’t take that rig to town
