On April 28th the Kenedy Lions traveled to George West to play the Longhorns in a warm up game for both teams.

George West was the second place team with a 12-2 district record and the Lions are the district champs and were looking to rebound from last Saturday’s loss to Runge.

The Lions would take the early lead as Rolie Zepeda would double to lead off the game and was moved over to third with Dominic Cruz’s ground ball to second.

Tristan Mejia would single to left to plate Zepeda. Isaac Cruz took the hill for the Lions and pitched 2 and 1/3 innings before succumbing to his cold. He would give up 5 runs with 3 earned on 5 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strike outs.

Tristan Mejia would come in to finish out the rest of the game on the mound with the score 5 to 1.

He would strike out the next two in the bottom of the third and then give up an unearned run in the fourth. He would only give up 1 hit while striking out 7 and walking 1.

Going into the top of the seventh the Lions were down 6-1.

Jeremy Rodriguez would walk and steal second with one out. With two outs JD De Los Santos would walk and bring up Zepeda who would intern double to right center to drive in Rodriguez and Cedric Mejia who was pinch running for De Los Santos.

Zepeda would be left at third as Dominic Cruz ground ball was fielded in the whole between first and second and was just beat to the bag to in the game.

Eddie Villarreal would be the only other Lions to record a hit as he went 1 for 3, Zepeda was 2 for 4, 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s, and T.

Mejia was 1 for 2 with a walk and an RBI.

This was a good test for the Lions as they have needed to see some playoff caliber pitching and George West did have that. With the lost the Lions record is now 14-2 with one district game left on Monday in Woodsboro and another warm up game against Somerset who is in the 3A top ten on Friday May 4th at 7:00 in Somerset.

Then the Lions will wait for the winner of Charlotte and Center Point which plays May 3rd and May 5th.
