KENEDY – On Sunday, April 29, members of the congregation at the First Baptist Church in Kenedy celebrated the 150 year anniversary of their church.

The original church was built in 1862 though the exact date is not known.

Over the years the church has grown and started more programs to involve the congregation and the community.

“The mission of the First Baptist Church of Kenedy is to Glorify God by joining Him in his work of reaching people in our community and throughout the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and developing them by God’s love into spiritually mature disciples”, said Reverend John Wheat.

In keeping with this mission the church offers Sunday services and a bible study for all ages.

The FBC of Kenedy also has a benevolence program to assist families that are facing financial difficulties.

Over the past five years members of the congregation have made missionary trips to the Dominican Republic to assist churches, orphanages and to help build health clinics.

The FBC of Kenedy was a pilot church for the upwards basketball program.

Upwards is a faith based basketball program that includes a short bible study during each practice and focuses on teaching good sportsmanship.

Upwards is non-denominational and is open to students between first and sixth grade.

The church has been presenting a resurrection service near Easter for the last three years.

The church also encourages the teens and children in the church to participate in summer camps, mission trips and bible studies.

The Church also has a Reteens group for older members on the first Monday of every month.
