After calling all day on Thursday looking for dry fields and waiting for answers Friday morning the Lions and Trojans agreed to play in Charlotte the whole series since they were able to get their field playable for the Friday 7:30 game.
In the first game the Lions would be the home team and Rolie Zepeda would take the hill for the Lions.
The Lions would strike first in the second inning as RayJ Garza would be hit by the pitch and Jeremy Rodriguez singled, Aaron Castillo would single to drive in Garza, Zepeda would walk followed by Dominic Cruz single to drive in Rodriguez.
In the third Isaac Cruz would single, Eddie Villarreal would be hit by the pitch, Garza would walk to load the bases with 1 out. Cruz would score on a pass ball to make it 3-0.
Charlotte would get a run on three hits in the top of the fourth for their only run of the game.
In the fifth as the Lions would load the bases again as JD De Los Santos walked, Villarreal singled, Garza would reach on an error.
Rodriguez would be hit by the pitch to bring the run in. A double play line drive by Castillo and a ground out by Zepeda would end this threat. In the sixth inning the Lions would give Zepeda lots of room to finish off the Trojans as Dominic Cruz would reach on the strike out and catcher error, Tristan Mejia would double to plate Cruz. Isaac Cruz would single in Mejia.
De Los Santos would single to make it first and second. Garza would get plunked again to load the bases and after two more pass balls the Lions would lead 8-1 where it would finish.
Zepeda would go the distance giving up 1 run on 8 hits and strike out 12.
In the second game on Saturday the Lions would be the visitors again would strike first in a very tight game as both Dominic Cruz and the Charlotte pitcher would have control of the game.
The Lions would break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning as Tristan Mejia would be hit by the pitch and get to second on the pitchers error on the throw over to first to pick off Mejia.
Mejia then would advance to third on Isaac Cruz’s fly ball to right.
De Los Santos would single with the infield in to drive in Mejia. The Lions would leave the bases loaded in this inning.
Going into the fifth inning the Lions still held a 1-0 advantage.
Charlotte would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on two hits with an infield hit and close play at first would bring the run in.
In the top of the seventh the Lions would give themselves breathing room. Dominic would get hit by the pitch and then steal second.
Mejia would then deliver an rbi single to give the Lions the lead. Isaac would walk to make it first and second.
Another walk to De Los Santos would load the bases with 1 out.
Mejia would score on a pass ball to make it 3-1 and the last run of the inning would score as Villarreal would hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Isaac and make it 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh Dominic would go out to finish the great job he had started and struck out the first batter.
He then gave up a single with 1 out.
He would then strike out the number nine hitter for the second out and looked like the game would be over as Mejia would make the snap throw down to first catching the Charlotte runner by surprise but he would be able to beat the throw to second to stay alive.
Cruz would face one more batter and give up an infield hit and then surrender the mound to senior Tristan Mejia to close it out.
Mejia would face two batters and the first would single to drive in the second run for Charlotte.
After a pass ball the Charlotte runners would be at second and third with two outs and Mejia would get the Charlotte power hitter to strike out to end the game and give the Lions the 4-2 win and sweep of the Trojans.
The Lions would make the most of their five hits in scoring 4 runs as Kris Bryan and JD De Los Santos both went 2 for 3.
Mejia would record the save and also go 1 for 3 and score 2 of the 4 runs.
Dominic picked up his seventh win of the year going 6 and 2/3 innings giving up 2 runs on 7 hits and striking out 12.
The Lions are now 17-3 on the year.
With the win the area champ Lions will now face the Mason Cowpunchers in the regional quarterfinals on Friday May 18th at 7:30 in Hondo in a one game series. Ticket prices will be $2 for students and $5 for adults.
