Kenedy woman killed, five injured in head-on crash

KENEDY – A Kenedy woman was killed and five others were injured in a head-on collision on State Highway 239 in the early morning hours of Sunday, Dec. 2.

According to information from the Department of Public Safety, the accident happened at about 1:49 a.m. at a location near the intersection of State Highway 239 and County Road 330, about two miles southeast of Kenedy.

Bradley Segeren, 51, of Karnes City was driving a 2012 GMC Sierra pickup northbound on State Highway 239 when it crossed into the southbound lane and crashed into a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Irene Cortez, 33, of Kenedy which was traveling southbound on the same highway.

Ofelia Cruz, 68, of Kenedy, a passenger in the Ford pickup was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Hilda Castro.

Four other passengers in the Ford pickup were injured, and one passenger in the GMC pickup was injured in the accident, according to police.

A spokesperson for DPS did not have any information about what may have been the cause of the accident, which remains under investigation by DPS Trooper Oscar Garcia.
