Track is a numbers game. It’s all about improving your time.

For the Sprint Relay team of Philip Vaughan, Paul Kinney, D.T. Lyons and K.D. Glenn, this season has been all about shattering records – and ironically, the boys broke their own coach’s 400 M. Relay record set 24 years ago during this year’s Badger Relays and again at District last Thursday.

“The record was held since 1989 with a time of 42.90,” Track Coach Donnie Dziuk said. “I was on that relay team. We were 4th in State that year.”

But Vaughan, Kinney, Lyons and Glenn surpassed this long-held record on March 23 when they ran a 42.84. Then, at the District meet in Poth April 11, they improved their time to a 42.68.

Even with Lyons using a new pair of spikes -- Lyon’s spikes were stolen, presumably by a rival team, during the first day of District competition, April 10, so he used another pair on hand – which were actually a half size too small. But it didn’t matter; he still helped his relay teams – the 400 and 800 – to first place finishes, in addition to his own 200 M. gold.

“I was very happy for them,” Dziuk said. “They work hard and deserved it.”

The Varsity and JV girls and boys won the District Championship, while the Varsity girls finished 3rd. With the top two in varsity competition advancing, KCHS qualified for 13 events at Regional April 26-27 at Rutledge Stadium in San Antonio. The regional qualifiers also will compete Friday and Saturday in Poth for the Qualifiers Meet.

To prepare, the track teams do a rigorous running workout twice a week and work on handoffs one to two times a week, in addition to practicing their field events.

“The underclassmen do the same workouts as the seniors,” Dziuk said. “Our JV Relays have also been very successful this year. I will miss the seniors but life goes on and the next group will have to work hard to be successful on the varsity level.”
