The fast action or reaction was caused by the reversal of an acceptance of Steven Silva in accepting the job offered him at last week’s board meeting.
Silva, through an email communique, stated that he decided against taking the job as he would “not be able to contribute to Skidmore-Tynan and their students with the level of effort and commitment I think they require of the AD position.”
Silva has been the assistant AD at Alice under Chris Soza for the past three years. He also had several years experience at A.C. Jones as one of the Trojans coaches under Soza when he was with the Beeville high school.
“I want to commend the selection committee in coming together on Sunday afternoon to go through the process again and come up with coach John Livas,” said S-TISD Superintendent Dr. Brett Belmarez.
The selection committee was formed with administrative staff from S-TISD and community members Daniel Naranjo, Bucky Haws, Beth Gonzales and Carroll Lohse.
Livas has ties to Bee County as he was on the staff of the Beeville Trojans under head coach Soza. He left in 2007 for a position at Tuloso-Midway. Livas was more recently the head coach for the Uvalde Coyotes before moving back to the South Texas Coastal Bend as offensive coordinator and assistant head football coach at Goliad. Livas has been in coaching for 14 years.
“I am very excited and really appreciate the opportunity here at Skidmore-Tynan. We’ll do whatever we can for the student/athletes,” Livas said.
“The student comes first though; academics are the most important.”
In football, the Bobcats will go back to a running game aligned along the slot-T formation. It is an offense Livas is most familiar with and has had good success running the misdirection style of football.
“I’ll be bringing in some familiar names to help coach at Skidmore-Tynan and I hope to have the staff in place as soon as possible. We’re eager and will bring a lot of enthusiasm and passion to the Bobcats,” Livas said.
Livas is married and introduced his personal coaching staff to the S-TISD trustees. Wife Elane and children Isabella (12 years old), son Justin (7) and daughter Katalina (1) all were in attendance at the board meeting to meet the trustees and community.
