AUSTWELL – An 80-year-old Austwell man died in a Saturday night fire that destroyed his home, according to Refugio County Sheriff Robert Bolcik.

Guadalupe Campos Martinez, 80, was found in a hallway leading back to the rear of the home at 402 Main St. in Austwell after the fire was put out.

No one else was in the house.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Emi Riemenschneider.

The fire was first reported at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, but by the time the Austwell Volunteer Fire Department arrived at the scene, the entire house was engulfed in flames.

More fire departments were called to bring tankers to help extinguish the fire, including the Tivoli Volunteer Fire Department and the Refugio Volunteer Fire Department, Bolcik said.

“It took about an hour and 15 minutes or so to put the fire out,” Bolcik said.

An official cause of the fire has not been determined, but a state fire marshal is investigating, according to Bolcik.

“It looks like at this point that it possibly might be electrical,” he said.

Justice of the Peace Riemenschneider ordered an autopsy and those results should be back soon, Bolcik said.

“The fire started in the garage area,” Bolcik said.

“The wind blew the fire into the main structure,” he added.
