I am writing this letter to say thank you to the Karnes County Veterans Services Officer Alex Caballero.

This past weekend I attended the “Wreaths across America” ceremony that he organized as the coordinator, at the Kenedy Joe Gulley Park Veterans Memorial. It was well attended and supported by our county officials and veterans from not only Karnes County but also the surrounding area. The event was beautiful, solemn and extremely important to our veterans and their families.

Veterans have not always been honored and appreciated for their service and Alex is doing a fantastic job letting them know Karnes County appreciates and supports them! This was the fourth major program Alex has organized with the local veterans in the last six months! Last month, he brought Retired Col. Hector Villarreal from the San Antonio Coalition for Veterans and Families to Kenedy. The program was on “Life after the Military”. This is again, a very important topic for veterans and their families. Opportunities like these would not be available in Karnes County, except for people like Alex who care so much for those who served.

With the holiday season, many veterans celebrate in silence. It’s a time they remember their comrades who never returned, and they wonder where they might be now had they returned. It is a joyous yet difficult time of year. Alex is working hard to ensure a Happy Holiday for all veterans and their families. I have enjoyed working with Alex and want others to know how he is opening doors. He understands the commitment veterans share for family, God and country.

Alex regularly transports veterans to VA facilities in San Antonio and encourages them to gather at Barth’s Restaurant monthly with other veterans for a program called “Peer to Peer”, facilitated by Nita Murillo and Sarah Gamboa of Camino Real Community Services. Alex worked tirelessly in July with the Runge Chamber of Commerce on the July 4, “Wall of Honor” to recognize and thank veterans for their service. It was a huge success and many are planning on participating again this next year.

What Alex does is a special calling. He knows the value and need for services to our veterans and he has a heart of gold. I want to thank Alex for his service, and to ask others to join me in assisting his efforts in any way you can. Thank you Alex and Thank you Veterans! Thank you all, who fought to make and keep our country great! Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad! & Happy New Year! From a person who hails from a family of veterans with an appreciative heart, may you be blessed and honored for your service.
