Friday, Jan 31, the Kenedy Lions took on the Falls City Beavers for sole possession of first place. In all likelyhood, this game was going to decide the district championship.
Kenedy, led by Jordan Valdez’s 8 points, came out fast, out scoring the Beavers 14-5 in the first quarter. “We played good defense on the Beavers. We jumped passes, we rebounded well, and put pressure on the shooters.” The Kenedy Lions kept up the pressure on Falls City, to take a 30-16 lead at the half. “I was worried coming out of halftime. Falls City is a good team, that can put points on the board in a hurry.”
The Lions came out with the same defensive intensity as the first half, allowing only 9 points for the Beavers.
“Our offense came out a little sluggish, but our defense stepped up. I have been preaching all year, defense wins championships.”
As the 4th quarter started, the Kenedy Lions held a 36-25 advantage. The Lions came out attacking in the 4th quarter. Falls City knocked down some shot to inch closer, but the Lions would not be denied. “We knocked down some big free throw in the 4th quarter, going 7 of 11 from the line.” The Kenedy Lions outscored the Falls City Beavers 19-15 in the fourth quarter to secure a 55-40 victory, and sole possession of first place.
The Kenedy Lions were led by Andre Martinez with 13 points, Dominic Cruz 12 points, Jordan Valdez 12 points, Jacob Asebedo 7 points, Seferino Villarreal 4 points, Xavier Villarreal 3 points, Graham Lawrence 3 points, Javier Hernandez 1 point. Falls City was led by Wiatrek with 16 points, Gabe Jimerson 10 points, Gaskamp 7 points, Jendrusch 6 points.
Kenedy vs Runge
Kenedy traveled to Runge for a big game. A victory for the Kenedy Lions would secure a playoff spot for the Lions, and eliminate Runge from playoff contention.
The game was tight from the beginning. Dominic Cruz and Jacob Asebedo knocked down two quick threes to give the Lions an early lead. The Yellow jackets came roaring back two threes by Torres to take a 13-11 first quarter lead. Runge, led by Richard Ramirez with 11 points, kept the pressure on the Lions. “They came out on fire. It seemed every shot they took, they made.” Runge ended the half with a 26-19 lead. “At halftime, me and Pete Maldonado decided we had man up Runge. This worried me because we don’t have the inside presence to match Richard.” The Lions re-focused on the job at hand, and came out more focused on defense. The offense came to life with quick threes from Dominic Cruz, Jacob Asebedo, and Andre Martinez. The Lions outscored the Yellow Jackets 18-7 in the third quarter, and kept it rolling into the 4th.
“Jordan Valdez played unbelievable defense on Richard. He was able to keep him in check, and give our offense a chance to get rolling.” The Lions outscored Runge 33-18 in the second half for a 52-44 victory. Dominic Cruz was the leading scorer with 12 points, Andre Martinez had 11 points, Jordan Valdez 9 points, Graham Lawrence 8 points, Jacob Asebedo 6 points, Seferino Villarreal 4 points, and Tony Aleman 2 points.
Runge was led by Richard Ramirez 20 points, Torres 12 points, Esparza 9 points, Saucedo 3 points.
With the victory, Kenedy clinched a playoff spot. The Lions are one win away fromclaiming the District Championship.
