Roger E. Sides Elementary students compete in UIL

Friday, Feb. 1, RES Elementary students in second thru fifth grade traveled to Poth to compete in district UIL competition. The writing events were held on Jan. 14, in Luling. Sixty-three students from RES participated in Art, Creative Writing, Dictionary Skills, Listening Skills, Maps, Graphs, & Charts, Music Memory, Number Sense, Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Spelling, Social Studies, and Storytelling. Other elementary schools participating in the meet were Poth, Nixon-Smiley, Luling, Halletsville, and Stockdale.

Coaching and preparing the students for these events were Sabrina Lewallen, Pam Nichols, Joyce Homeyer, Demetrio Garcia, Saundra Moy, Amber Green, Diane Dziuk, Michele Voelkel, Irene Perez, Esmeralda Perales, Jacque Cunningham, Jillian Wiatrek, Suzanne Brown, Nancy Huser, Jennifer Gonzales, Liza Smith, Ashleigh Sablatura, Tamyra Albers, Veronica Patton, Vannessa Chandler, and Diann Lane.

Second grade events: Creative Writing: Peyton Harrell, Ava Cummings, Jaycee Polasek, and Ainsley Barrientez (alternate). Storytelling: Gabrielle Franke (2nd), Ava Cummings (6th), Samantha Garcia, and Kash Brown (Best Alternate).

Third grade events: Ready Writing: LJ Kroll (1st), Landri Cornelius (4th), Madison Gwosdz (5th), and Jaylin Cantu (alternate). Spelling: Third place team members included Andrew Baker, Jacob Valdez, Madison Gwosdz, and Dylon Gatica (alternate). The Music Team placed ­­­­first overall. Team members Riley Huser (3rd), Arie Trevino (4th), LJ Kroll, (6th), Kaslyn Moczygemba, Shamus Feagin, Lauren Bourne (alternate), and Sincere Alaniz (alternate). Storytelling-LJ Kroll (3rd), Riley Huser, (6th), Treyton Clark, and Marina Munoz (alternate).

Fourth grade events: Art: Michaela Kunschik (6th). Music Team placed first overall with members Trey Cantu (1st place and Perfect Paper), Jaiden Robinson (1st place and Perfect Paper), and Joseph Valdez (3rd). Number Sense: Team members included Joseph Valdez (4th), Keagan Morin, Nicholas Perales, and Denae Garcia (Best Alternate). Oral Reading: Shaylan Wright (2nd), Jaiden Robinson (3rd), Joshua Henke (4th), and Sydney Wiatrek (Best Alternate). Ready Writing: Team members included Shaylan Wright, Krystina Mika, Michaela Kunschik, and Reece Clubb (Alternate). Spelling team members included Michaela Kunschik, Trenton Janysek, Elianna Rosales, and Gracie Mendoza (alternate).

Fifth grade events: Art Team placed second overall with Kylee Rodriguez (3rd), Imigen Morin (5th) and Kayla Jalufka. Music Team placed first overall with Leticia Perales (1st and Perfect Paper), Christopher Lopez (2nd), Alicia Osuna (3rd), and Gilbert Salas (4th). Dictionary Skills Team placed first overall- Liliana Cavazos (6th), Ella Cummings (5th), Haylee Green (3rd), and Makayla Franco (alternate). Listening Skills­ placed first as a team with Michael Kroll (1st), Claire Portwood (3rd), Joe Gonzales, and Geneve Gilley (alternate). Maps, Graphs, and Charts: Third place team included Brooke Gisler, Madylin Moczygemba, Braden Brown, and Damian Hernandez (alternate). Number Sense: Team members Anna Bonnet (5th), Damian Hernandez, Colby Culpepper, and Ryland Wieding (Best Alternate). Oral Reading: Jentri Cornelius (1st), Maddie Franke (3rd), and Anna Bonnet (5th). Ready Writing: Ella Cummings (1st), Maddie Franke (2nd), Jentri Cornelius (3rd), and Anna Bonnet (Best Alternate). Spelling: Team members were Haylee Green, Michael Kroll, Joe Gonzales, and Cayla Robinson (alternate). Social Studies: Team members were Ella Cummings, Brooke Gisler (5th), Madylin Moczygemba, and Scout Hodges (alternate).
