Port A got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Cruz walked the first batter he faced and the lead off man quickly stole second base. A wild pitch advanced the runner to third, but after striking the next two batters out it appeared Cruz may get out of the inning with no damage being done. Then with two strikes, the Marlins clean up hitter looped a liner just out of the reach of a diving Ray J. Garza at second base, which plated Port A’s only run until they pushed across the game winner in the ninth.
The Lions were able to get on the board in the fourth inning when senior center fielder Nate De Los Santos reached on an by error the first basemen. De Los Santos advanced to second on a hard ground ball by Ray J. Garza that went for a fielders choice. Then with one out, Kenedy first baseman Bryant Tiemann fought off an inside pitch for an RBI single, unfortunately for the Lions this would be the only run to come across the plate on the night.
With the game tied at one in the bottom of the ninth, Port Aransas hit a single with two outs and the runner took second on an error. Cruz took the next better to a two strike count before he looped a single into left field plating the winning run for the Marlins. Both Cruz for the Lions and Roberts for Port Aransas pitched masterful games, both going the distance and both recording 19 strikeouts. Cruz was helped defensively by catcher Jordan Valdez who threw out two runners trying to steal and blocked the plate nicely on an attempted steal of home. The Lions will continue district play Wednesday night at home against Falls City.
