David Salazar, 32, was alone in a 2008 van when it and a 2014 Dodge Durango collided almost head-on.
The driver of the Durango, 24-year-old Joanna Quiroz of Beeville, was flown by a HALO-Flight helicopter to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital with incapacitating injuries. She was listed in serious condition.
A one-year-old boy, Oscar Luis Vasquez, also was flown to Corpus Christi with non-incapacitating injuries. He was listed as being in serious condition.
A girl, Audrey Vasquez, was taken by ambulance to Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville. Her condition was listed as stable. Her age was estimated at about two months old.
Both children also were from Beeville.
Highway Patrol Trooper Jarrad Williams reported that the accident happened at about 12:15 p.m. when the eastbound Durango apparently veered into the westbound lane and the two vehicles collided.
The van careened into a ditch on the north side of the highway, overturned and caught fire.
The Durango remained on the roadway.
Williams said the children were both strapped into child safety seats at the time of the accident.
