KARNES CITY – At its April 14 meeting the Karnes City ISD reviewed and approved to renew its inter-local agreements with the Floresville ISD, regarding both the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program as well as the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program.

Every three years Karnes City ISD renews its contractual agreements with the Floresville ISD, authorizing them to provide educational programming for its Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) students at the Floresville Alternative Education Center, according to district officials.

The DAEP is an instructional program that is defined as an “educational and self-discipline alternative” for students who have been removed from regular school classes for necessary disciplinary reasons, if deemed necessary by district principals, and then placed in a DAEP. The DAEP for Karnes City ISD is the Floresville Alternative Education Center.

Information from the Texas Education Agency states that the DAEP is meant to be a “positive, proactive discipline management” that is a “resource for school districts in implementing strategies for safe schools.”

“The agreement was up for renewal this year. In addition to Karnes City ISD students, the program also serves students from other districts that participate in the program,” said Superintendent Jeanette Winn.

The district also currently has a contractual agreement with the Wilson County, Karnes County, and the Karnes-Wilson County Juvenile board, authorizing the Floresville ISD to provide educational programming for the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP) students at the Floresville Alternative Center.

“This agreement is automatically renewed each year. A new agreement was generated this year which included some minor changes, so the revised agreement was presented to the board. The JJAEP program serves students who have been expelled from our school district or have been assigned by the court system,” explained Winn after the meeting.

In addition to Karnes City ISD students, the DAEP and JJAEP programs of the Floresville Alternative Education Center also serve students from other districts such as Floresville ISD, La Vernia ISD, Nixon-Smiley CISD, Poth ISD, Falls City ISD, Kenedy ISD, Runge ISD, and Stockdale ISD.

Also at the meeting the board approved to renew an agreement with the City of Karnes City that allows the City to use some of the school district facilities. In turn, the City enters into an agreement with the Little League baseball program for the use of district facilities. The previous agreement is expiring, so the renewed agreement was presented and approved.
