KENEDY – The City of Kenedy mailed notice of the updated Stage 2 Mandatory water conservation measures to all of their water customers on Thursday, Aug. 14.

Under the restrictions put in place in June of 2012, residents were limited to two days per week for landscape watering, but under the new restrictions, watering is now limited to one day per week.

The notice states that effective immediately, and due to continued drought and hot dry weather conditions, the city is implementing the measures in accordance with the city’s drought contingency plan.

Outdoor watering of landscaped areas with hose-end sprinklers or automatic irrigation systems is prohibited from from 10 a.m. through 6 p.m. every day of the week.

Residents with street addresses ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8) may water outdoor areas on Saturdays between the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. of the following day.

Residents with street addresses ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9) may water outdoor areas on Thursdays between the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. of the following day.

Use of water to wash down sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, or other surfaced areas is prohibited.

According to Kenedy City Manger Ford Patton, the restrictions have been put in place largely due to aquifer levels in the Kenedy area that are rapidly dropping.

There needs to be enough water above the submerged pumps in order to prevent them failing, so the city’s water department is limiting its production of water in order to maintain those safe levels.

At the rate the levels are continuing to fall, further water restrictions may become necessary at some point in the future, Patton said.

Contrary to persistent rumors stating otherwise, Patton said that the City of Kenedy does not sell water for use by oil and gas companies operating in the area, and water for other commercial purposes, such as landscaping, falls under the same restrictions as residential customers.

The above conservation measures apply to all water customers, commercial and residential, of the City of Kenedy.
