The Refugio Junior High Bobcats put a double-whammy on the visiting Hebbronville Longhorns during homecoming week, with a 32-0 shutout by the 7th graders and a 42-8 by the 8th graders.

The 7th grade Bobcats took the field first against the Longhorns and made their presence known quickly on a three-play scoring drive capped off by Isaiah Perez who scored from 15 yards out.

The point-after attempt failed but the Cats held a 6-0 lead. Defensively Refugio did not allow Hebbronville to move more than a yard on third down, and Malik Brown recovered a Longhorn fumble.

Kobe Green exploded with a QB keeper for 45 untouched yards to the goal line, following a few Bobcat mishaps. Cole Van Ness added the 2 point conversion making it 14-0, still in the 1st quarter.

The Longhorn defense stiffened up to hold the Bobcats on their next 2 offensive series. Although, Refugio dominated defensive play.

The Longhorns’ struggling offense provided an avenue for Refugio’s next score. Hebbronville punted and Kobe Green broke loose again, returning the Longhorn punt 60 yards for a Bobcat score.

In the second half, Isaiah Perez scampered 55 yards on the Bobcats’ first offensive series. The Bobcats scored once more by going to the air. Kobe Green connected with Omri Oliver on a 35-yard touchdown reception.

The offensive line provided all the protection needed to score. The 8th grade started where the 7th grade left off with a 36-8 lead at halftime. The Bobcat defense held the Longhorns throughout the game, giving up one score on a busted kick return.

On the defensive side of things the Cats were directed by a multitude of players who shut down the Longhorn scoring. Leading the defense were Eli Oliver, J.R. Castellano, Tyler Castellano, Ryan Whitehead, Brent Wendell, Jimmy Resendez, Marcus Sanchez and Nate Smith.

On Refugio’s next offensive series déjà vu honed in on the Longhorns as Whetsel took the QB keeper 48 yards for another Bobcat touchdown. Refugio’s offensive onslaught continued in the first half as they paved the way for Bobcat rushers to pound out 3 more scores. Outstanding blocking efforts were provided by Nate Smith, Ryan Whitehead, J.R. Castellano, Marcus Sanchez, and Michael Barraza.

In the second quarter running back Eli Oliver took a sweep off the left end for 60 yards after pulling off a tight walking act on the side lines. The Bobcats then reached into their bag of tricks with a reverse to Tyler Castellano for a 65-yard touchdown.

Refugio finally added to the score through a conversion as Chase Whetsel connected with James Durst for two points. Whetsel would provide the rest of the offense for the Cats.
