Skidmore-Tynan Lady Cats topple Taft

The Skidmore-Tynan Lady Cats pushed their district volleyball record to 10-2 on Tuesday night with a straight set win over the Taft Greyhounds in Taft.

The S-T girls have two more regular season matches and the outcome of both will help determine the postseason seeds. The Lady Cats play front-running Freer today (Saturday) and hope to avenge an earlier loss to the Lady Bucs. On Tuesday night, the S-T girls will host the Bishop Lady Badgers that could be the final deciding factor on the playoff seeds.

Tuesday’s match finished with the Lady Cats winning comfortably in set one by the score of 25-10. Set two was a little more competitive but the Lady Cats captured a 25-14 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the best of five match. In the final set, the Lady ’Hounds did some howling but, in the end, the Lady Cats prevailed 25-20 for the three-set sweep.

Kathy Acosta led the offense with 12 kills over the three sets. D’Anne Wilder hit for four kills as did Samantha Minter. The Lady Cats’ service game continued strong with 11 aces in the match. Aaliyah East hit three aces while Brittany Garza, Celina Acosta and Minter each had two.Wilder and Kathy Acosta had one ace apiece.

On the defensive side, Celina Acosta led the way with 13 digs while Minter contributed 10 digs. Kathy Acosta followed with seven digs to help in the victory.

Garza led the team in assists with 11 and Wilder set up six teammates.

Celina Acosta played well along the net on defense with a match-high six blocks.

The Lady Cats are in the playoffs but these next two matches will be for the district title and placement in the playoffs.
