H-E-Buddy and McGruff brought smiles to all the children in attendance. The festive tone was set while throngs of attendees meandered from entertainment tents to vendors to food and beverage booths, and to shady patches on the lawn where they might absorb the history of the Buffalo soldiers and the George West re-enactment troupe.
Red Wagon Parade entries sat on display throughout the day’s events in a special spot near the courthouse steps. Judged by members of the visiting Custom Car clubs, the following wagons were selected as the winners in the divisions of Commercial, Adult and Youth. Winners in each division were awarded a famous one-of-a-kind Red Wagon trophy.
First place winner in the Commercial Category was Saenz Construction LLC. Second place was won by First National Bank of George West and third place went to Betty McQueen with Grannies Gourmet Cookies.
Among the Adult entries, GWHS Librarian Donna Wagner and her Library Club team took first place, followed by Miss Western Week Princess and Seniors sponsored by the Beeville Rotary Club. Third place winners were Miss Western Week Teen and Missy also sponsored by Beeville Rotary.
It is notable that some wagons were disqualified from the judging for failing to meet the Storyfest entry criteria.
Youth division winners were Live Oak County 4-H Council in first place and George West Junior High FCCLA in second place. The third place trophy was not awarded due to a shortage of entries in the youth division.
The Red Wagon committee wishes to thank GWISD for promoting the event on its streaming signs. It thanks this year’s participants and looks forward to a fresh assortment of creative entries for Storyfest 2011 the first Saturday in November.
