The JV Lady Trojans vs. Ray contest last Tuesday night sure did not look like it was going to be a nail-biter, but that’s what it turned into with a ferocious Beeville fourth quarter comeback that led to a 46-44 victory.

The young Lady Trojan led by two at the end of the first period at 10-8, but the visitors shook off the opening quarter jitters and ran off in the second quarter. The Lady Texans scored 21 points over that period while holding the Lady Trojans to nine tallies. It was all Ray at 29-19 going into the halftime break.

The two teams played evenly in the third, each squad hit for 10 points, so it was still a 10-point Ray margin entering the final quarter.

That’s when the Lady Trojans picked up their defensive intensity and gave the Lady Texans fits. Several turnovers by the visitors led to easy baskets and the momentum definitely switched to Beeville’s side of the floor.

In the final few minutes, the Lady Trojans had all but erased the 10-point deficit but they trailed most of the way. With just seconds left on the clock and the game tied at 44, Krystal Cuellar hit the winning shot just before the buzzer sounded. The JV girls had fought back and captured an exciting 46-44 victory.

“The Lady Trojans play with heart and it will keep us strong,” said JV coach Gracy Bryce.

Brianna Jackson led the Beeville scoring attack with 13 points. Noemi Lopez followed with 12 points. Zehlia Frias recorded nine while Cuellar finished with eight. Kaitlyn DeLeon and Adrianna Baltazar each contributed two.

The JV girls played at Calallen on Tuesday and will compete in their own JV/FR tournament that begins on Thursday and continues through Saturday’s finals.
