The Lady Cats stormed back in the fourth quarter to bring the game within two points with under a minute to play, but unfortunately the clock ran faster than the Lady Cats could score and Lady Cats came up seven points short, falling 40-33.
Alexa Montemayor had 11 points, haley brynelsen and Megan shaw each had 7.
In game two on Thursday, the Lady Cats fell into the consolation bracket which led them to play Halletsville sacred heart. The Lady Cats jumped out to a 25-19 half time lead and that was all they needed as they continued to apply the defensive pressure that would lead to turnovers. The Lady Cats defeated sacred heart 51-33 to move on to the next round of the bracket.
Friday nights action had the lady cats taking on the Columbus Lady Cardinals. This was a hard fought, physical battle that came down to the final buzzer. The score was tied 15-15 at half time and in the third quarter the cats we ahead 23-21. In the fourth quarter the Lady Cats outscored the cardinals 10-8 which led to 33-29 victory.
“This was a good win for us. We had to battle. We proved to ourselves that when we play hard good things will happen,” said Coach Hemphill.
The win sent the Lady Cats to the consolation championship on Saturday morning.
The consolation final pitted the Lady Cats against the state ranked Louise Lady Hornets. The Lady Cats jumped out to 24-18 halftime lead. In the second half the Louise six foot tall senior post Katie Brown took control of the game.
“The Lady Cats did everything in their power
to try and hold her down,” said Coach Hemphill.
“She’s a tough player. She is physical and very active around the basket. She has all the moves. She’ll be tough for anyone to guard.”
The Lady Cats fell 60-36 in the consolation championship.
“It was a good, competitive tournament for us and that’s why we went. We finished with two wins and two losses,” said Coach Hemphill.
“We don’t like to have those losses but, we fought hard and competed well in all the games and that’s what we are striving for. As long as we play hard and compete, good things will happen for us.”.
Montemayor was chosen to the all tournament team.
