According to Three Rivers Municipal Judge Dawn Benham, the court is utilizing a program called “Driving on the Right Side of the Road” to help teach teens texting or drinking while driving is the leading cause of death among their age group.

This program is sponsored by the State Bar of Texas, Texas Municipal Courts Education Center, Texas Department of Transportation and the Law Focused Education, Inc.

“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15-20-year-olds. Texting and driving is a major problem and drinking and driving goes without saying. I feel if someone can take a moment and read the sign and take a long hard look at the wrecked car, then maybe they will think twice before texting or drinking while driving,” said Judge Benham.

“The whole purpose of this is to raise public awareness of the importance of traffic safety in local communities. Life is precious and if this sign saves one life or makes an impact on someone’s life, then this program was a success,” the judge added.

In addition to Benham, sponsors for the program include retired Police Sgt. Dick Poore, Valero, Live Oak Insurance, City of Three Rivers crew, Charlie’s Wrecker, CPL and Pruchnicki family. A sign to accompany the wrecked vehicle was painted by Johnny Parrish.
