As a clarification of last week’s column, “Suicide Is Not Painless” by Ivy Conner (Dec 15, 2010), there was never an inference that everyone who dies from suicide is going to hell.

Some were concerned about the following sentence in Ivy’s article, “If the Bible is to be believed there is a horrible future awaiting those who leave this life without faith and without hope.” I stand by this statement. Romans 8:25 and Hebrews 11:6 tell us that we are saved by hope and that without faith we cannot please God. Whoever leaves this world without faith and hope is in jeopardy of eternal judgment.

However, it is important to note that following paragraph was edited by the paper because of space considerations: “And finally I must say that those who choose to end life are not necessarily lost in Hell forever as some would so hurtfully and ignorantly teach. We often do not know ‘why’ or the problems or the pressures or the physical condition or the emotional state of one so desperate as to even consider doing such a foolish and selfish thing as ending their own life. We are not the judge. God is the one who determines our final destiny. Let us not judge foolishly. See I Cor. 4:3-5.”

I re-affirm this—it is not for us to judge, leave that to God, II Timothy 4:1-5.
