The Pettus Lady Eagles claimed two wins on Tuesday at the Christmas Classic in the City hosted by Incarnate Word Academy.

The Lady Eagles dealt district foe Woodsboro a 42-32 loss and then came back in the late afternoon to defeat the Runge Lady ‘Jackets 35-31.

The tournament runs through Wednesday and the Lady Eagles still have a game or two to complete their run in the tournament.

The Lady Eagles versus Lady Eagles’ contest was close through the first period as Woodsboro earned a slim 8-7 advantage after one period. The Pettus girls captured the lead by the end of the half by outscoring Woodsboro 11-8 over the second period.

The tilt was still anybody’s game heading into the third period at 17-15 with Pettus in front.

The third period defense of the Pettus Lady Eagles was the determining factor. The Bee County girls slammed the door on the WHS Lady Eagles, allowing just six points over the third quarter. The tough defense created several turnovers and easy baskets for Pettus. The Lady Eagles led Woodsboro 35-21 going into the final eight minutes. Woodsboro rallied but it wasn’t enough as the Pettus girls earned the 42-32 victory.

Madi Carrizales led the Pettus scoring with 14 points. Hailee Schauer followed closely with 13 markers. Madi Garza hit for eight points while Chloe Garza contributed three points in the win. Savannah Del Bosque and Destiny Carrillo both added two points for the Pettus girls.

The second game of the day had the Lady Eagles against another district foe, the Runge Lady ‘Jackets.

The contest turned into a defensive struggle right from the opening tip. Both teams struggled scoring and it was a 14-11 game at the half with Pettus having the advantage. The Lady Eagles allowed just two second period points to the Runge girls.

The second half was a little faster paced but not by much. Pettus outscored Runge by one, 21-20, to capture a 35-31 win over the Lady ‘Jackets. Chloe Garza hit for 10 points as did Carrizales in the win. Schauer added eight points and Ryan Grayson contributed five tallies. Carrillo completed the scoring with two markers for the Lady Eagles.

The full tournament results for the Lady Eagles should be available by next Wednesday’s edition of the Bee-Picayune.
