The Refugio Lady Cats went into overtime Jan. 7 to defeat the San Diego Lady Vqueros 48-46 in a barn burner that had fans on the edge of their seats.

If you were not in the Refugio gym, you missed an exciting contest, said Coach David Hemphill.

“It was a battle of wills with neither team ever leading by more than four points,” Hemphill said.

The Lady Cats were ahead 25-23 at half time and up 37-33 at the end of three. When the buzzer sounded at the end of regulation, the score was knotted at 43-43, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Haley Brynelsen, Jackie Gonzales and Megan Shaw made key free throws to seal the 48-46 victory for the Lady Cats, with under a minute left in the overtime.

The free throws sent the Lady Cats up by one each time. But both times, San Diego had an answer with game-tying free throws. With under 19 seconds to play, Shaw was fouled and calmly stepped to the line and sank two free throws to put the Lady Cats ahead by two.

After a desperation shot from San Diego that missed, Gonzales secured the rebound and dribbled out the time as the final buzzer sounded.

“We showed a lot of poise and character in the closing minutes of the game and into overtime,” the coach said. “Because of foul trouble, we had some kids step up and play position’s that they weren’t used to playing and they did a good job. It was a big win for our girls.”

The win sends the Lady Cats into a three-way tie for third in district at 3-2 and runs their overall record to 15-8.

Alexa Montemayor led the Lady Cats in scoring with 16, followed by Cecilia Bauer with 8 points and 8 rebounds and freshmen Jackie Gonzales with 12 rebounds.
