The Coastal Bend College Lady Cougars opened their 2011 softball season on Saturday with a split of their doubleheader with the Cisco College Wranglers in San Antonio.

The two teams met on the field at St. Mary’s University and the Lady Cougars prevailed in the first game by the score of 9-4. Audrey Benavidez went 2-4 at the plate with two doubles and three runs scored for the CBC women. Benavidez was also the pitcher of record and picked up the first win of the season. Maria Lopez also went 2-4 with one double and knocked in three runs. Sabrina Gonzalez contributed with two hits in four trips with a triple and two RBI’s in the first game.

“We came out strong in the first game, but we lost a little of our intensity in game two,” said CBC coach Esteven Vasquez.

“We are a young squad and we have to learn that on the college level we’re playing doubleheaders all the time. We have to learn to maintain our focus, our intensity.”

In the second contest, the Wranglers returned the favor and captured a 9-4 victory.

Moise Gonzales led the CBC offense with a perfect 3-3 day at the plate. She smashed a triple with one RBI and one run scored in the contest. Amber Kalka had two hits in three trips to the plate with a double and two runs scored. Lopez again came through with a 2-4 performance at the plate.

On Friday, the Lady Cougars will travel to Laredo to meet the Laredo Community College squad in another doubleheader that has the first pitch of the first game set for 1 p.m. On Saturday, the Lady Cougars will be back in San Antonio to play Our Lady of the Lake. The first pitch of game one in that series is slated for 1 p.m.
