The Coastal Bend College Lady Cougar softball team was in San Antonio this weekend and split their doubleheader with the Our Lady of the Lake University Saints.

The split gives the CBC women a 2-2 record on the year heading into this weekend’s tournament appearance in Fort Worth at the Cowtown Tournament.

Game one on Sunday had the Saints jump all over the Lady Cougars and blast their way to a 15-2 victory in five innings. Highlights for the CBC women included a 1-1 performance at the plate by third baseman Maria Lopez, who scored one of the CBC runs. Moise Gonzalez, the designated player, went 1-2 with a run and one RBI for the Lady Cougars.

Also collecting base hits in the contest were catcher Amber Kalka and center fielder Noemi Trevino. Pitcher Kelsy Runk picked up the loss on the mound.

The second game of the twinbill went to the visiting Lady Cougars, 10-8. Sera Quiroga went six innings in the circle and picked up the win while recording three strikeouts. Sabrina Gonzalez picked up the save by pitching the seventh inning for the Lady Cougars.

The CBC bats came alive in the second game and blistered the ball. Outfielder Sabrina Gonzalez led the way with a big home run and one other hit in three trips to the plate. Gonzalez knocked in two runs and scored once in the win. DP Moise Gonzalez went three for four with three runs. Kalka, playing third in the second game of the day, had two hits in four trips with two RBI’s. Shortstop Krizelma Flores had one hit in three trips with two runs batted in.

“We played fairly well. Losing the first game was tough but the Lady Cougars kept their composure and focus and came back and won game two,” said CBC coach Estevan Vasquez.

“I liked what I saw on Sunday, playing against a four-year university. It will give us some confidence and momentum going into this weekend’s tournament in Ft. Worth.”
