Editor:

I’m concerned with the daily placement of our law enforcement officers in our school zones with their emergency lights steadily flashing in Refugio.

I understand that their primary objective is the safety of our kids. My concern is that the citizens of our county are daily being lured into breaking the law as an unintended consequence of our well-intentioned peace officers.

According to Texas state law SB 193, motorists nearing emergency vehicles with lights activated are required to either change lanes away from the emergency vehicle, or slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit while passing the emergency vehicle.

As the speed limit is 20 mph in the school zone, the law requires the driver to slow to 5 mph if they are unable to change lanes.

Decreasing our speed to 5 mph as we pass the vehicle, or changing lanes on the streets in the school zones will seriously disrupt traffic patterns and be more dangerous for our kids, as well as cause excess congestion.

I wish our peace officers would reconsider running these lights when simply monitoring traffic as they have.

Thank you for your consideration.
