Trojan netters place third at Kingsville meet

Trojan Eric Dehnert captured the mens’ singles competition at the recent Kingsville tennis tournament.

The Trojan varsity tennis team placed third at the Kingsville Tennis Invitational, played last Friday.

Sophomore Eric Dehnert led the Trojans, going undefeated through the tournament and capturing the gold medal in men’s singles. Dehnert breezed through the championship match, defeating Alice’s Brannon Cretors, 6-1, 6-1. Dehnert was 4-0 for the tournament.

The Trojan doubles team of Brandon Lucio and Jesse Barrera made it into the quarterfinals before falling to Vasquez and Vasquez of C.C. Ray, 8-3. Barrera and Lucio went 2-1 in the tournament.

The Lady Trojan doubles team of Emily Barris and Heather Gonzales also worked their way into the quarterfinals before falling to San Benito’s Hutacb and Lyra, 8-2. Barris and Gonzales had another outstanding tournament, going 3-1.

In mixed doubles, Trojans Scott Townsend and Megan Burris went 1-1 for the tournament, beating Benavides and Salinas (Falfurrias), 8-1, before falling to Calallen, 8-5.

Cori Moore went 1-1 in ladies singles and Bill Rivas was 1-1 in men’s singles. Trojans Brandon Lucio and Jesse Barrera went 1-1 in men’s doubles.

Other varsity participants included Caleb Traylor and Kayla Keys.

In the JV division, Aaron Gonzales went 1-1 in boys singles, and Ora Bruns was 1-1 in girls singles.

In boys’ doubles, Roberto Reyna and Colten Wren went 1-1. In girls’ doubles, Samantha Ramon and Marisela Ibarra reached the quarterfinals before falling to C.C. King, 8-4. The girls finished fourth in the tournament, going 3-2.

Mason Elliot captured the bronze medal in men’s singles. Elliot was 2-1 for the tournament.

Others competing in the JV division included Kali Kennedy, Zachary Amador, Graham Traylor and Rachel Wolfe.

The varsity team competed in the Port Aransas Spring Fling on Friday.
