The Kenedy Public Library wants to invite kids to participate in a reading contest. The contest will run from Monday, August 2 to Thursday, August 12. Kids will be able to check out 10 books at a time. The top reader will receive an award and be announced Friday, August 13 at 11 p.m. at the Kenedy Public Library. Refreshments will be served. Prepare for school by using the library.


To kick off this year’s football season, the Kenedy Lions will be having an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday, August 6 at 10 p.m. Gates open at 9 p.m. with the KHS Cheerleader Boosters having a concession stand and the Athletic Booster Club selling ads and flip flops. Flip flops will be on sale for $15. Come join the fun and support the Lions.


Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church invites the community to our First Cook-off Saturday, August 7. Categories include: Beans, pork, spare ribs, half chicken, and brisket. Entry fees for each category are $30 or $100 for all four. Prizes will be given for first through third place in each category. The Karnes County VFW Memorial Post 8572 will hold its regular monthly meeting on Sunday August 8, at 2 p.m. at the Post, located at 221 Young Street in Kenedy. All members are urged to attend. For more information contact Felipe Quintero, Jr., QM, at 789-4273.


The Kenedy High School Athletic Booster Club is now taking personal and business advertising orders for the 2010 Season Football programs. The deadline to order the ads is Saturday, August 7. This year’s programs will be professionally published by Bay Area Sports with 500 copies printed. Descendants of Thomas Schwab, born in 1818 in Michelsrombach, Hesse, Germany, will be holding their 51st Annual Schwab Reunion on Sunday, August 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Comal County Fair Grounds, Arts & Crafts Building, in New Braunfels.  A pot luck meal will be served beginning at 12:30. Those attending are asked to bring a main dish plus a side dish or a dessert. Also, please consider bringing items for the silent auction or a cake for a cake walk. Bingo will be played again this year and all prizes or donations are welcome as well. blood pressure/sugar monitoring

First Baptist Church of Kenedy and Kaiser Home Health are offering a “free” blood pressure check and a blood sugar monitoring for all seniors 60 years and better on Tuesday, August 10 at 1 p.m. in the Christian Life Center foyer. The monthly senior adult fellowship will follow at 2 p.m. First Baptist is located at 209 E. School Street in Kenedy.


The Community Council of South Central Texas, Inc. (CCSCT) and the San Antonio Food Bank has been contracted by the Texas Department of Human Services to administer the Texas Commodity Assistance Program. Distribution will be held on Thursday, August 12. Sign up is at 8 a.m. at the Kenedy City Hall Auditorium. Eligible participants, i.e., low-income families, unemployed workers and other needy persons can receive food that has been donated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Registration packets for the Kenedy ISD 2010-2011 school year for students in grades Pre-K through fifth will be available for parents to pick up on Thursday, August 12, from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. We ask that parents complete packets and return them to Kenedy Elementary School by Tuesday, August 17. All immunizations must be up-to-date prior to the first day of school, August 23. Kenedy ISD welcomes transfer students. In addition to registration packets, anyone wishing to transfer into the district should contact Irma R. Leal at 830-583-4100, ext. 1557.


The Karnes City Badger Boosters Committee is hosting a BBQ sausage fundraiser Sunday, August 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Plates are to go only. Drive through pickup is at KCHS.


Karnes City ISD is now taking applications for substitute teachers.  Substitutes new to the District must take the substitute teacher training scheduled for Tuesday, August 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. It is not required to repeat this class yearly. All individuals interested in taking the training must have an application in the Superintendent’s Office by Friday, August 13. Applicants holding a bachelor’s degree or higher are not required to take the training. All substitute teachers must provide proof of high school diploma or the equivalent, proof of eligibility to work, and are required to submit fingerprints per Texas Legislature SB9 passed in 2007. All Karnes County families are invited to a free day of food, fun, swimming and family at the Karnes County Country Club on Saturday, August 21 from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, contact Kim Garcia at 830-393-0856.


The Storehouse, located at 340 N. Sunset Strip in Kenedy, will be distributing 50 to 60 pounds of food to parents of school-aged children on Thursday, August 26 and Thursday, September 23 at 5:30 p.m. All participants must have qualifying income and be a Karnes County resident. “Tell Yourself” Nobody Needs to Suffer with the Disease of Addiction Alone. Narcotics Anonymous meets every Monday and Thursday from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. at the Curtis Johnson Visitors Center, one-quarter mile outside the entrance to the Connally Prison entrance in Kenedy. Meetings are open to everyone.


Are your afternoons free? Ours too. The Runge Public Library invites you to come by and socialize. Every Monday through Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. the Runge Public Library will be hosting a free afternoon social. All adults are welcome to drop by and play games, do puzzles, create crafts, and/or chat. Coffee, conversation, snacks, an air-conditioned room, and it’s all free. We’ve got playing cards, board games, dominos, and jigsaw puzzles available, and someone’s always on hand whether you’d like to do something or just sit around and talk about nothing in particular. So come on by and join us


The Wesley Nurse Exercise Class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays at 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Karnes City United Methodist Church. The class is free. We walk indoors (heat/AC as needed!) and include strengthening exercises. Do something good for your body — come join us. You don’t have to be ‘in shape’ to get in shape.
