The Lagarto Community Club held their monthly meeting on March 10th. President Lucy Cantu called the meeting to order and welcomed 13 members and six guests. Connie Castanon read the inspirational message entitled “Welcome Friend” by Grace E. Easley. Lee Smith gave the blessing and we shared a pot luck luncheon and dessert. Our hostesses were Lee Smith and Sharon Tonne who decorated with a St. Patrick’s Day theme.

When the meeting resumed, President Lucy Cantu introduced our guest speaker, Jim Doughty, Live Oak County Constable. Mr. Doughty joined us to talk about the rise in violence and criminal activity along the border. He noted that there are a large amount of weapons sold to criminals in Mexico from the United States and planes, trucks, boats, and submarines are used to transport drugs to the States. He said the most active trafficing is done at the El Paso and Juarez border. In 2010, there were 71,041 drug related deaths in Mexico and no borders are safe.

Following Mr. Doughty’s presentation, the door prize was drawn and guest Leonard Keese won. Speakers and male guests were allowed to leave before President Cantu continued the business portion of the meeting.

New business discussed was about our upcoming fund raisers. We will be selling personalized kitchen items until the May 12th meeting. All members have a brochure and price list. These will make great Mother’s Day gifts and there is no tax charged for these items.

On April 9th, we will have our annual Rummage Sale beginning at 8 a.m. In addition to the Rummage Sale, there will be plants and baked goods for sale. We will also have vendors selling various items. For lunch, there will be a large slice of pizza and coke for $3.

It was suggested we have a Mother’s Day raffle. The owner of “Sweet Nothings” donated a gorgeous purse and there will be a necklace, an afghan and two restaurant tickets as prizes. We will have a booth at the Orange Grove Pioneer Days and tickets will be sold there for $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing for the raffle will be May 5th before Mother’s Day!

It is time for our High School scholarships and new officer selection. Volunteers were taken for the Scholarship Selection Committee and the Nominating Committee.

Members enjoyed a fun trip to two local wineries and the Goliad Market Days last Saturday. Members looked at the brochure for the Gulf Breeze Alpaca Ranch and decided to visit it on May 19th.

We had five birthdays this month, Amanda Benderman, Diana Vasquez, Bea McCumber, Joyce Sattler and Lucy Cantu. Happy Birthday was sung to Joyce and Lucy who attended the meeting.

The next meeting for the Lagarto Community Club will be April 14th. Anyone interested in joining this group is welcome to attend.
