Trojan netters take second at Sandcrab tennis meet

The Trojan varsity tennis team placed second at the Calhoun Sandcrab Tennis Invitational in Port Lavaca on Friday. The Trojans scored six silvers and one bronze.

Eric Dehnert led the Trojans, going 3-1 in the tournament. In his first round match, Dehnert cruised to a 8-1 win over Brazosport’s Jose Mendez. In the quarterfinals, Dehnert defeated Keith Ressler (Yoakum), 8-4. In the semifinals, Dehnert defeated Greg Gilmore (Aransas Pass), 7-5, 6-4. In the finals, Garret Gomez (Victoria West) capitalized on several unforced errors to defeat Dehnert, 6-4, 7-5.

Lady Trojans Ellen Addison and Megan Burris brought home silver medals in girls’ doubles. They went 3-1 for the tournament. In their first round match, Addison and Burris defeated Hamilton and Anderson (Edna), 8-1. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Hennessey and Vasquez (Victoria West), 8-0. In the semifinals, Addison and Burris defeated Anderson and Callray, 8-0. The championship round went three sets with Trevino and Wissinger (El Campo) squeaking out a 10-6 tiebreaker to win the third set and match.

Emily Barris and Heather Gonzales won two straight matches before falling to Trevino and Wissinger (El Campo), 8-5, in the quarterfinals. Burris and Gonzales defeated Graham and Evans (Edna), 8-4, and Valenta and Gardner (Calhoun), 8-2, before falling to the El Campo dual in the quarterfinals.

In boys’ doubles, Brandon Lucio and Jesse Barrera won the bronze medal, going 2-1 in the tournament for third place. They defeated Galvan and Garza (Aransas Pass), 8-5, and Martinez and Reck (El Campo), 6-7, 6-1, 10-4, to claim the bronze medal. Lucio and Barrera were defeated by Yeh and Hsu (Calhoun) in the semi-finals, 8-6.

Lindsey Roberson and Scott Townsend advanced to the championship round before falling to the No. 1 seeds in mixed doubles, Meek and Hernandez (El Campo), 7-5, 7-5. Roberson and Townsend advanced to the championship round by defeating Brady and Baimbridge (El Campo), 8-0, and Bleier and Hernandez (Victoria East), 6-1, 6-0.

Competing in girls’ singles, Cori Moore won her first round match from Riddhi Jani (Bay City), 8-5, before falling to Sandi Torries (Yoakum) in the quarterfinals, 8-6.

Other Trojans competing in the Calhoun tournament included Caleb Traylor, Kayla Keys, Roberto Reyna, Mason Elliot and Bill Rivas.

The Trojans will compete in the district tournament being held in Victoria on April 4-5.
