Art students from Second Street Gallery will show their artwork flying on kites as part of this year’s Bluebonnet Days in Kenedy. The kites will carry art work created in classes this month under the direction of Saundra Schultz.

April is National Kite Month and will culminate in Kenedy on May 7 with a collaboration of Second Street Gallery’s creations and kites now on display at Phelps Family Dentistry. Everyone is invited to not only observe the kites, but to also bring kites and fly them along with the artists at Joe Gulley Park on Saturday afternoon following the Bluebonnet Days Parade.

The fun fly will not be a competition, but awards will be given for hand-crafted kites. Several categories will be awarded, including outstanding kite decorating, kite design, longest tail, and best flight. At Joe Gulley Park registration for the event will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the fly will conclude at 3:00 p.m. with awards and a drawing for an authentic Chinese dragon kite.

Any kite can fly at the fun fly. Store-bought kites are welcomed and hand-crafted kites are encouraged. A kite building table will be set up at City Hall just before the Bluebonnet Days Parade to help those who want to make their own creations. At the park in the afternoon a free store-bought kite will be given to the first 25 fliers to register. Registration will enter participants in the drawing for the Chinese dragon kite held at the park at the conclusion of the fun fly.

Experienced kite fliers are invited to help demonstrate kite flying and kite building, or to help guide novice kite fliers at the event. This is a first-time event in Kenedy.
