This season was field with obstacle after obstacle for George West senior Taylor McCumber. After qualifying for regional’s four years in a row, Taylor finally reached the ultimate goal of competing in Austin at the state meet in the pole vault.

This year started great for the Senior. Taylor signed with Texas A&M Kingsville during the first of track season, and things couldn’t have been brighter for her. The early part of the season McCumber was well on her way of setting all new records. Then in the middle of the season she fell and hurt her leg.

The district meet was the first time she tried to vault, she placed second and qualified for regional’s. When she jumped at the regional meet she knew we only had a few quality jumps before her leg would give out. She came in at a height of 9’ and most of the other girls were out. McCumber and one other contestant cleared 9’6” on her first try and the rest of the girls failed to clear. Taylor placed second at regional meet.

This was McCumber’s first trip to the state track meet. She was amazed with everything from getting to see the 3A and 4A teams compete to the warm up area. That just happened to be Darrell K. Royal stadium.

McCumber started at 9’6” and cleared on her third attempt. She put together two more great vaults of 10’ and 10’6” without any problems. She moved up a pole for the 11’ vault but was unable to clear. She placed eighth.

This was the best McCumber has looked all year. She will be continuing her career in pole vault with former team mate Amy Rabalai in Kingsville.
