Loudmouth Golf and its CEO Larry Jackson have been sponsoring the Loudmouth Golf Math Program at Moreno Middle School this year. John Johnson, sixth-grade math instructor at MMS, has been teaching math through the game of golf. He says he has found a way to teach the math skills needed to succeed by playing golf and having a bit of fun. When students like something, it becomes easier and fun for them.
The golf tournament on Thursday at the Beeville Country Club beginning at 4 p.m. is the finale of the math program at MMS and will be held as the grand prize to reward the students for their hard work. The tournament will be played by the top four students in sixth grade.
Roslyn Holland was thrilled when she learned that she had been moved up to the first spot. She then had the opportunity to choose who she wanted to play golf with on Thursday. She chose Larry Jackson, CEO of Loudmouth Golf. The three remaining students are: second spot – Abigail Traylor, who will partner up with Mitch Luna; third spot – Christina Perez, who will partner with Hank Looney; and fourth spot – Ana Casas with Johnson. The group will play nine holes and retire to the home of the Casas family for dinner and an awards ceremony.
The proclamation will be read at the beginning of the golf tournament by council member Libby Hitchcock Spires (sitting in for the mayor). The proclamation states the importance of education and the process in which it is learned.
Johnson and his math group hope to build this program and make it bigger and stronger each year. He hopes to produce some of the most intelligent students in Texas.
